How macerating toilets work
A macerating toilet system moves wastewater through a small discharge line using a powered pump. The pump receives waste from a rear-discharge toilet, cuts or macerates solids, and pushes the mixture toward an existing drain connection.
The basic sequence
- The toilet flushes into the macerator unit.
- The unit activates automatically.
- Its cutter and impeller process and move the waste.
- Wastewater leaves through a relatively small discharge pipe toward the building drain.
- Additional fixtures may drain into auxiliary inlets when the specific model supports them.
Why homeowners use them
The attraction is routing flexibility. Simple Project markets its SNFLEX line for basement and restricted-layout bathrooms without breaking concrete, while Saniflo and Liberty Pumps likewise position macerating systems for bathroom additions where conventional drainage would be difficult.
Lift ratings are not interchangeable
A published maximum vertical lift is not a guarantee for every layout. Pipe diameter, horizontal run, fittings and elevation all affect performance. Liberty Pumps' Ascent II manual, for example, gives explicit lift-calculation rules and requires the vertical portion to precede the longer horizontal run.
